Balancing your mind and body, even as lockdown is eased.
You must have heard that famous expression Mens sana in corpore sano. This centuries-old phrase is more relevant than ever, as it advocates the need for perfect mind-body balance. Although it may sometimes seem impossible, especially now that lockdown restrictions are being eased, you should focus on achieving it.
You must have heard that famous expression Mens sana in corpore sano. This centuries-old phrase is more relevant than ever, as it advocates the need for perfect mind-body balance. Although it may sometimes seem impossible, especially now that lockdown restrictions are being eased, you should focus on achieving it.
As you know, your body is a complex universe in which everything is interconnected. If you feel anxious, it’s reflected in your face; there’s an absolute interrelationship between your body and mind and between your well-being and health, and in this sense, how your emotions can have an impact.
The latest advances in medicine and biology clearly demonstrate that, because of this connection, the aging process depends largely on how the brain reacts to the stimuli it receives through the nervous system.
Modern science confirms this: during periods of stress, the body releases cortisol, the so-called “stress hormone”, which has terrible consequences for the condition of the skin, resulting in imbalances that speed up the aging process, as well as causing dehydration, irritation, irregular sebum secretion, wrinkles, flaccidity and countless changes that can make your face age much quicker.
The body and mind is a whole, and it’s very important you’re aware of that. It’s scientifically proven that anything that positively or negatively affects your mind will have an effect on your body, and vice versa. An example of this is the scientific research of Nobel Prize winner for medicine, Elizabeth Blackburn, which demonstrated the direct connection between how emotional well-being can affect the body. Blackburn confirmed the direct link between stress and the shortening of telomeres, which are determining factors in the skin aging process that protect the DNA and prevent its degradation.
The Australian Nobel Prize winner carried out a study on people who suffered stress on a daily basis, proving that telomeres are shortened when subjected to more stress, causing a deterioration in health which leads to problems in the entire body and speeds up the aging process. Therefore, the skin is not left unaffected; it’s scientifically proven that when subjected to more stress, the skin appears older.
In her study, Elizabeth Blackburn also discovered how the condition of the telomeres could be improved to stay healthy and keep the skin looking younger for longer. So, to achieve perfect mind-body balance, you should reduce stress and make changes in your lifestyle habits to provide relaxation and well-being, as these have a direct impact on your health.
Exercise, a balanced diet and plenty of rest… It’s a cliché, but luckily, it’s in your hands to make a difference.
Now is the perfect time to make changes and setting yourself a routine can help if you haven’t already done so during lockdown. New stage, new habits.
This will not only benefit you when lockdown is eased, when you’ll no doubt be busier than usual getting back into your work routine. It will also help you establish some healthy lifestyle habits that you can keep up afterwards.
Set yourself a schedule reflecting the time you get up and the time you go to bed, and in between, the activities you need to make your day enjoyable and relaxed. It’s not always possible to get 8 hours’ sleep but being aware that your body needs a minimum number of hours to repair itself overnight might force you to get them and gradually, your body will get used to a rest routine.
– In your daily routine, incorporate exercise, dancing, toning, cardio, or any activity that motivates you. Here, the aim is not so much to get fit, but to help you release endorphins. Sport and physical activity act both on a psychological and physiological level to reduce stress in the body and increase the feeling of well-being.
So, exercise has a direct physiological and psychological action, and now you can do it outdoors, there’s no excuses.
Meditation and yoga also help to balance the mind and body – it’s the perfect time to discover them.
– The weekly menu: essential. Every Sunday, create the menu for the week ahead and fill it with healthy, balanced meals full of antioxidants, nutrients, vitamins and healthy fats. When it comes to this habit, plan ahead, don’t improvise. Knowing in advance what you’re going to eat will help you have everything you need to cook at home and prevent you from eating any old thing.
Now you’ve returned to, or are about to go back to your usual busy routine, remember to save some time to pamper yourself, to continue doing things that fill your soul and make you feel good, maybe even the things you started doing during lockdown, like reading, drawing, cooking, or chatting with family and friends. Use these days to tick off your to-do list. And of course, take care of your skin.
